The scholar of engineering is an expert of assembling and disassembling things. He understands physical puzzles and solves them with ease. As he advances his studies, he learns to move through mechanical landscapes with a supernatural ease and fluidity.

Field Skill: Knowledge (engineering).

Field Studies: jury-rig (3rd), make whole (6th), tiny hut (9th), malfunction (12th), major creation (15th), animate objects (18th).

Field Feats: Craft Construct, Craft Magic Arms and Armor, Craft Wondrous Item, Extra Ranger Trap, Frugal Trapsmith*, Learn Ranger Trap, Quick Trapsmith*, Skill Focus (Craft [any]), Skill Focus (Knowledge [engineer]), Trap Spotter*.

* You may take these rogue talents as feats with no prerequisites.

Field Abilities: The following are the granted abilities of the engineering field.

Firearm Tinker: At 1st level, you gain Exotic Weapon Proficiency (firearms) and Gunsmithing as bonus feats. You also receive a battered gun identical to the one gained by the gunslinger.

Versatile Engineering (Ex): At 3rd level, you add Disable Device to your list of class skills. You gain trapfinding as a rogue of your level, and you add your trapfinding bonus on attack and damage rolls against constructs, unattended objects, vehicles, and structures. Additionally, you may use Knowledge (engineering) in place of Knowledge (arcana) skill checks made concerning constructs. When substituting in this way, you use your total Knowledge (engineering) bonus, including class skill bonus, in place of your Knowledge (arcana) bonus.

Object Companion (Ex): At 9th level, you gain the companionship of a medium animated object. Unlike a normal animated object, the object companion's alignment matches yours, and it has an Intelligence score of 6, which qualifies it to take feats based on its hit dice. The object companion serves you and can communicate intelligibly with you, though it possesses no natural means of speech. The object has a number of hit points equal to half your total, and uses your base attack bonus and save bonuses. The object does not receive any skill ranks of its own, but can use yours as a familiar can. Your object also receives versatile engineering, as a scholar of your level. Otherwise, this object is identical to the Medium animated object found in the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary.

If the object companion is destroyed, it can be reconstructed 1 week later through a special process that costs 200 gp per scholar level. This assembly takes 24 hours to complete. The object companion receives bonus construction points, feats, and ability score adjustments as you level up, as shown on the table below. New feats and adjustments to ability scores are treated as though gained from hit dice advancement. Your object companion's construction points and feats can be reconfigured every time you level up or reconstruct it.

Improved Disassembly (Ex): At 15th level, you and your object companion ignore up to 10 points of hardness when damaging constructs, unattended objects, vehicles, and structures. This stacks with the hardness-bypassing qualities of adamantine weapons, and applies equally to attacks with weapons, supernatural, spell-like, and spell abilities. When using Disable Device, treat the subject of your check as though it were one category simpler to work with when determining how long your check takes. If you're already working with a Simple device (such as a lock), your check takes a standard action instead of 1 round.

Through the Cogs (Su): At 20th level, you can pass through constructs and masonry like a knife through butter. You can move through any mundane artificial or constructed barrier (even those made from metal) with a burrow speed equal to your land speed. Your object companion can move with you when you do this, but it cannot enter walls on its own. In addition, you can score critical hits against constructs, unattended objects, vehicles, and structures. You automatically confirm all such critical hits, but the bonus damage from your versatile engineering ability is not multiplied.
